I'm using 5/4 pressure treated deck boards. I'm going 2x12 12" OC, because I like overkill and I dont like decks that are spongy. Also, it is a big deck and we I want it to be able to hold lots of people .we are party animals.
This is Part 9 of 9 in our Series on Restoring Wood Decks and Building New Wood Decks. Navigate to the first article: Restoring a Wood Deck With your joists installed, here are some final tips for deck construction.
Installing deck boards usually begins at the house wall and goes out toward the end, with the boards always running perpendicular to the joists. Measure from the outside edge of one rim joist to the outside edge of the other one to get the length of the first 2 deck boards.
1. Carefully determine the height for the ledgerwhich will also be the height for all the joist framing. The top of the ledger board should be lower than the desired top of the finished deck by one decking boards thickness, plus the thickness of the flashing usually 1/8 inch .
Joists are the floor supports that your decking will ride on and typically extend out from the house perpendicularly, between the ledger and face board, or with one end resting on the double beam. The simplest and strongest way to install deck joists is to use joist hanger brackets.
This report provides details for attaching a 2" nominal lumber deck ledger to residential floor systems constructed with metal plate connected wood MPCW floor trusses. Q. Are ledger lag-bolting schedules that were developed for 2-by rim joists adequate for engineered rims?
Attach Deck Joists. Use structural screws and fasteners to attach these to the rim joists perpendicular to the deck board layout. Use structural screws and hangers. Install Bracing or Bridging. Bracing keeps the joists from warping as they dry and increases stability. Its also useful for attaching railing posts.
Deck Ledgers and I-Joist Floor Systems With such a wide range of engineered wood products available, a prescriptive approach for attaching a ledger to an EWP rim is hard to come by.
Anchor deck joists to the ledger with joist hangers, filling each hole with galvanized joist hanger nails rated for pressure-treated wood. Predrill and sink 1/2-in. dia., galvanized or stainless steel lag screws in every other joist space, alternating up and down positions to keep the ledger from splitting.
Installing Joists over Dropped Beam Mark out the joist positions on the top of a dropped beam to match the layout of the joist positions on the ledger board. Measure, cut and set the joists in place on top of the dropped beam.
What do you guys think of this technique of putting 16" OC blocking between each joist, secured with joist hangers, in order to lay deck boards parallel to the joists see attached image ? In the case of 2x8 joists that span 11ft, I wonder if this weakens the structure, or if the load still gets distributed the same.
Deck Joist Installation Steps - Putting the Joists in Place for your Deck Attach the End Joists and Make Square the Joists, Ledger Board and Deck Beam Begin your joist installation with the end joists, it is best to design your deck and ledger so that these joists cover the ends of the ledger.
Always leave the deck boards extending past the outside joist when lying decking. Chalk a line once all the decking is down and cut with a skill saw. When cutting off maintenance free decking, cut off the deck boards when all of the decking is complete.
floor and deck joists are going to be different heights at least slightly and you need to decide if you want them flush at the top or if you want the deck stepped down slightly.
Once all of the joists, and rim joists, are cut and measured to length, attach one end of the rim joist to the ledger with a joist hanger. The rim joists should be about 1 ½ shorter than the front to back measurement of the deck.
